Is Grayish-Bluish-Green the New Beige?

From our foyer, one can see about half of our house, so I'm looking for a neutral color that I can paint most of it.
I'm kind of bored of the typical beige color that we had in our last house...and as much as I love the look of all white, I like colored walls too much to use it.

My husband and I both love blue - and we live at a lake, so we'd like our home to give a subtle casual beach vibe.

Sounds easy enough...
...or not.  This is my 2nd set of paint chips.  Usually, I go to the store, stare at the swatches, pick one and paint.

But I need something soothing since this is where I spend about 95% of my waking hours...with 2 toddlers...and a hyper dog who loves to bark at the 2350 rabbits in our yard.

I want a soft gray-blue with a hint of green.

Here are the top contenders...
This is an actual swatch from the Lowe's website, it looks more blue here than it does on the paper swatch. The first picture is actually closer to how it looks in person.

I know, I said no beige...but I'm drawn to this color and...

...this color.  Though I don't know if these colors might be too dark for such a big space.

Sea salt blue...sigh...can you the salt on your lips?
This is the shade my husband and I both liked from the first set of paint chips...and the only one I carried into the second batch of options.

I've never tried buying the small sample paints before...usually I dive right in and buy the color I like.

I think I'm going to try it this time because it's likely I'll be living with this color for a long time....and with 2 toddlers, I need as many soothing elements around me as possible!

Which of these colors do you like best?

Prepare Yourself for Chaos

Today is my husband's 40th Birthday...I'm throwing a party for him on Saturday.
Bryan's 40th Birthday Party
(This is the E-Invite I sent)

Our house would cause many of you to shudder in shock and disgust...so brace yourselves. You may want to bookmark this page so you can show your husbands, wives, cats, or neighbors how much more clean and organized your house is than mine.

(I bet you're thinking, "she's not really going to do this is she") Yep, I'm doing it.  It's actually kind of liberating...in an edited-so-you-don't-see-the-really-bad-mess kind of way.

To begin our lovely tour, there's a piano in my foyer...
Funny story - the previous homeowners left this piano behind for us.  When you move it, the front legs fall off.  Good fun when there are 2 of you moving it, and one of those 2 people only has 1 usable hand.
Pianos are heavy.

Then, we took out a closet, so there's a hole in the fireplace (maybe we should have checked that before ripping out the closet)...and also a hole in the ceiling that's waiting for my dad (Hi dad!) to help us rewire the electric.

(here's how it looked with the closet)

...and back to the tour...
As you can see, there's quite a lot of  unopened flooring....526.8 sq ft of it to be exact.

Finally, I welcome you to join me in our sun room (main living area)...
All of these toddler treasures, 2 couches, a chair, 2 ottomans, tv stand, tv, 2 tables...will be moved today so we can put down the new floor.
I wanted to paint all of the wood trim around the 14 windows in the sun room white before Saturday...but I don't see that happening.

And just to make it all a little more interesting...we are all sick and I found my waterlogged camera sitting next to the kitchen sink (had a clogged sink last night)...and I have 2 more wreaths to make and ship by Friday.

Don't you feel better now :)  Please don't feel bad for me...
relax and enjoy the humor of it all....that's what I'm doing, otherwise, I'd go crazy.

Don't forget to join me tomorrow for...

Time to move the furniture, so I'll talk to y'all later :).

Too Tired...

...to come up with a name for this post. If you choose to read it (enter at your own risk), you'll see why naming this mess of randomness might be a challenge.

Staring at my computer screen for the past 10 minutes hasn't managed to inspire me either. hmmm.

(thought I'd add a little swirl for a moment of visual randomness)

So anyway, it's been a busy couple days of teething/cranky toddlers, crafting, closet-demolition-ing, wreath making, treasure-hunting, and booth remodeling (actually, that's scheduled for tomorrow).

I'm covered in chalkboard paint and pastel craft paint - and I have all kinds of Easter/Spring fun to share as soon as I can take some pictures.  I've never really done any crafting for Easter or Spring before - but wanted to add a little color and fun to my booth space and Etsy shop - it's been a lot of fun, especially since white latex or chalkboard paint are usually the only "colors" I use.

The shop that sells my wreaths featured them on their blog..which was a surprise to me.  Since the rest of my family is asleep right now, I'm sharing my happy little moment with you...lucky you, right?

Here are a couple pictures from the post:

Tomorrow is another busy-bee day, but hopefully, I'll be able to share some auction finds, my booth update, and some of the Spring/Easter crafts I've been working on with you in the next couple days.

By the way....anyone know how to make rolled paper flowers and looking for a hobby?  I have so many wreath ideas that I want to try, but not enough time to make all of the flowers.  If only I could safely handle a glue gun in my sleep...I could work around-the-clock!

If you've made it this far, I commend you....you are a fantastic friend. thank you so much.

Since I'm being random...anyone try dying coffee filters or making a wreath yet? If so, PLEASE let me know.

Now...off . to . bed.

Hideous Blue Carpet

No, I haven't run off and joined the circus...

Nothing as adventurous as that.  I'm working on a large order of  wreaths for a wedding in California - the bride is using them as centerpieces for her reception.

Between the wreaths, keeping up with my Etsy Shop and antique shop booth and wrangling my lively toddlers...oh, and feeding my Pinterest addiction, I've been an absent blogger.

Oh, and we've been doing a little demo 'round the house. Have you noticed that I barely EVER show pictures of my house? There's a reason..hideous.blue.carpet (among other things)

Here's a little glimpse of said hideous blue carpet...
(This is my husband setting up Max's train set on Christmas Eve)
If you're wondering what the lovely black edge on the fireplace is, it's plumbing insulation that we used to baby proof...we have a 2-sided fireplace, so this is much less expensive (although, not as attractive) than the official childproofing stuff.

Okay, back on topic...hideous.blue.carpet.  Well, the carpet became even more hideous after several months of leaky sippy cups, crafting, and my husband's "run-in" with the table saw.

Being that we have A LOT of hideous blue carpet to replace, and Bryan is on disability due to his hand until possibly the end of April, we had to be pretty thrifty with our floor shopping.

So...when I found this Mountain Pine Laminate with padding at Lumber Liquidators for $1.49 per sq ft, I was on it like white on rice.

If you really like it, it's on sale now for $1.19.  I love it...the price and the floor.  Laminate is ideal for us because the kids ride everything but motorized vehicles through our house.  It looks so real, you have to touch it to know it's not.

We were so excited about the new floor that we forgot to take a picture before ripping out the old carpet.  It's quite unfortunate, as one can not truly appreciate the "after" without a good picture of the "before".

You can see a little of the blue carpet in the middle of the picture.

Oh, and see the bump out on the right of the fireplace, there's a Christmas tree inside.  The previous homeowner passed away and her kids had no idea she had stored a Christmas tree next to the fireplace.  They didn't offer to move it.

Max is obsessive about everything being picked up....except his toys. For 2 years old, he's actually pretty helpful with holding the dustpan...sweeping is another story.

Floor installation...doing well with 1 hand. Until...

I reminded my husband that I wanted the closet removed. The doors with the big yellow X is was a coat closet, but it just made our already-enormous-2-sided fireplace even more massive looking...so, it has to go...

...in the process of getting rid of the closet, but then my husband wasn't sure if it was a load bearing wall...

...so here's how it looks today...
...uhh, what's that you say? It's the same picture? Why yes, yes it is.

And stop looking at our brick planter with the fake ivy...I know it's not cute.  There are little rocks under the ivy, so I've left the ivy to protect the rocks from being consumed by small children.

Not much of a transformation, I admit, but it's moving in the right direction.
I just wanted to show you what I've been up to since I've been MIA lately.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Renovation Reality, Part 2....We Survived to Tell the Tale

There were many days that I thought the end of this renovation would never come.  We had to repaint every.single.surface. inside and out - the trim, walls, stairs, ceilings, doors.  I often told people the house was held together with caulking and plaster.

Nevertheless, we made it and were luckily able to sell it very quickly when we put it on the market. Here's a little reminder of the exterior we started with:
ahhhh, so pretty...as was the overgrown/jungle-esque backyard.  You can't see it in the picture, but the previous owner had dug a 4' trench around the red door and window.  Nice.

Here are the remainder of the lovely BEFORE pictures. (Grab your hardhat and enter at your own risk)

And now, finally, here are some pictures of the "after."  Please know that we were decorating on NO budget while trying to attract a higher-end buyer... and had to sell ASAP because we had another baby on the way.  I'll try to point out places where we scrimped/saved money.

Back of the house- notice we took the "bump" off the basement level.  Also, on the left (where the round window is located), we added stairs to the basement.  Prior to adding these stairs, you had to go through the old SCARY cellar to get to the newly finished basement.

Front exterior -we removed MOUNTAINS of english ivy and planted grass/added landscaping.  We redid the porch ceiling with beadboard. We eventually repainted the front door red before we listed it to sell.

This is looking into the foyer from the living room.  This is a scanned picture, so I'm sorry for the poor quality (you'll see several throughout this post)  The door is a closet, and to the right is the dining room, kitchen, sun room, office/playroom, and stairs to the new basement.

Please excuse the stroller...this is the sun room.  It use to be an exterior porch, so it was built on a tilt for water drainage.  We built the cornice to try to camouflage the slant in the room.  I made the "curtains" out of some really discounted fabric at JoAnn's.  I painted the quote, "Dwell in possibility - Emily Dickenson," by hand.  Although out realtor told us to repaint the room in a more neutral color, I left it as is because I thought it was so fun.

Kitchen, completely gutted and redone

Standing in the sun room, dining area is to the right.

You can kind of see the sun room on the right, dining room is to the left. On the other side of the double oven is a room that could be used as a bedroom, office, den, or playroom.

This is the dining room, complete with my childhood dining table (free!) that I painted dark blue. (Sorry for another icky picture)  The light fixture isn't one I'd pick for myself, but it was simple, and more importantly, it was very inexpensive!

Only one more icky picture after this.  This is the den-bedroom-playroom.  The laundry room that use to me in the dirt-floor cellar (was a closet) in the back left corner.  There's a half bath that we added (it was another closet).  We had planned on putting french doors where the large window is located and we wanted to build a deck - but we ran out of time, energy and money.

Please excuse the horrible picture and the grumpy bulldog.  This is the only picture I have of the top of the stair case...it use to be a wall and was one of the bigger challenges we faced in trying to complete so that it matched the lower portion (existing) of the stairs.  The end result turned out beautifully - I wish I had a better picture to share!

This is the master bedroom closet.  We added the wall to make it a closet.

Master bedroom - with my $15 headboard I painted black.  Master bath is on the right.

Master Bedroom - on the right you can see the hall we added, the door to the nursery, and the top of the stairs (that was originally closed off)

Master Bathroom

This is the finished portion of the basement.  The stairs originate in the kitchen, behind the stove.  The dresser and bed and linens are from Ikea. The lamp is from a thrift store. New laminate floors.  The closet door is one of the original wood doors from the house that we didn't need, and we cut it down to fit the space.

The picture on the back of the bed is one of the old wood windows from the house.  I printed some graphics out onto cardstock and colored them in.  I painted the border, and taped the pages onto the back of the window.  Free art (if you can call it "art").

The other half of the basement - you can see the foot of the bed to the left. (And a nice pic of our AC unit out the window!)

I think that's all the pictures I have...and I've only shown you maybe half the house.  I'm impressed if you've made it this far with me though!  I loved this house - it made me so happy when another young family bought it and loved it maybe more than we did (no nightmarish reno experiences!)

Just to bring it full-circle - the house BEFORE.

And AFTER:

Now, (sigh), we begin again...but we were smarter this time...at least we can live in the house we just bought....with its blue carpet and red countertops.

I've seen many beautiful renovations completed here in blog-land.  Any fun stories to share?  I'd love to hear (or see) them!

I originally wrote this post before I knew what "linking up" was - but I'm so much older and wiser now (almost 3 mos!), so I've linked to these parties...
