Chest #126...and a little Christmas Decor

Just to prepare you, I'm feeling a little feisty tonight.
So, yet another chest.  I know, I know.  And I don't even have a before picture...I've only been blogging since August, and I'm already slipping.  Basically, it was a big brown, dirty, old plywood box.

First thing I did was add some casters....and did the whole priming and painting thing....
... and I finally joined the number club and put a number on it..and then I distressed it.  On the inside - it was a big old mess, and the only way I could think to fix it would be to cover it.  I applied a glaze and stain mixture over the book pages before a couple coats of poly.
  (If you're jealous of the pretty brown, office-like carpet...you should be...added bonus...it's in the kitchen.  The last owner "loved carpet in the kitchen")

I had a couple pieces of furniture sell, so we took the new chest to add to my booth.  I didn't get any good pictures before my husband stuck it in the car.

I also added the sisal handles
I always wonder why people choose the numbers they do...I chose #126 because 1/26 is our wedding anniversary.

This would make a great coffee table...with bunches of storage (toys!).  (any takers?  if you live nearby, I'll even bring it to ya!) Since it's on casters, it could easily be moved out of the way if more space is needed.

Made a couple changes...

A little Christmas decor for the ole' booth.  See the fringe-y tree on the left...guess what it's made from....COFFEE FILTERS.  I almost lost a finger in the making of that-there tree. The flowers on the little wreath...uh huh, COFFEE FILTERS.

The garland...COFFEE FILTERS (and book pages)...and the wreath around the trunk...COFFEE FILTERS! I'm a woman possessed...maybe I should rename my blog...Salvaged Coffee Filters?  Coffee Filter Crafts?  Nah.

I changed the knobs on the kitchen island.  And put new inserts in the picture frames.

A little glittery tree made from cardstock and book pages.  I know you can't tell, but there's a little flower on the rusty scoop next to the tree...and shhh, it's made from COFFEE FILTERS.


My husband built an A-MAZ-ING farm dining table out of an old door.  You will pee your pants, it's so awesome.  I need to put some poly on it and take pictures, but hopefully, I'll have those for you in the next couple days....so you better come back and check it out. (promise??)
 I didn't even know he had these abilities...and we've been married almost 4 years!  He probably shouldn't have revealed this hidden skill to me because now the possibilities are endless!!! (Bwah, HA, HA...does that sound evil in your head, because it's supposed to)

Painted "Emerson Seed Co" Trunk

If you haven't visited Kindra's blog - or linked up to her Terrific Under Ten Tuesday Party (link below) - I highly reccomend doing both!  Kindra's party is for projects that cost under $10.00....so obviously, thrifty fun to be had by all!
 


This is trunk #2 in my attempt to save the ugly old trunks of America...for some reason I have a whole trunk collection piling up in my garage.  I don't have a particular love for them over any other pieces of furniture.  I have at least 3 more that I know of that need some love (if you could see my garage right now, you'd understand why I said "that I know of").  So, to recap - Trunk #1
And on to trunk #2...unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of the "before" - but this was a big old green trunk/chest that I found at a yard sale for $6. When I get a chance to paint without children running amok, I often forget everything (like taking pictures) and focus on getting as much painting done as possible.  I did a layer of light gray, and then a couple coats of black.  The writing is in white.
Sorry for the poor pictures, I was wrangling toddlers and trying to make room in the garage to take pictures because it's raining outside.  It was good fun, if you can't tell by my tone!

I like how it turned out much better in person than in these pictures. 

The lid is a little crooked, but I like the dove-tailed corners.

"Emerson" is my daughter's name.

  





I had to do a lot of cropping to cut out our insanely messy garage.

The Tedious Trunk

A couple days ago I mentioned that I was in the middle of painting an old chest.  It's cedar and had a very dark stain that had seen better days.  I first painted it black, then a light khaki, and finally a cream color, which shown in the picture below.

I'm planning on selling this, but I thought about how I'd want it to look if I were going to put it in my house.  I decided on blue-gray stripes...

I measured them out and taped with Frogtape (which I TOTALLY LOVE)

So, here it is after I painted and distressed it.  I had some trouble with some of my paint peeling...I think because I didn't wait long enough to distress it.  I thought maybe if I added some stain, it might make the large patches look more natural.

My husband came out and said, "did you want it to be brown."  Uh, no. Hmmmm. Not only was it brown, but it was splotchy.  The stripes were also darker than I envisioned them.

 
Soooo, I mixed some plaster of paris with semi-gloss white, hoping to get a chalky look.

Of course, Emme was over-seeing the entire process.

So there she is....she's starting to grow on me more and more.  My husband has instructed me to move on to the next project and stop thinking about it.

What do you think, theoretically speaking, would you buy something like this?(I promise not to hold you to it!)  If not, what would make it more appealing to you.  (My husband may light it on fire it I touch it again...in the sweetest way possible, of course.)

Apparently, I'm going through a trunk phase in my "artistic" development right now...here's another one.
